2017: The Year of Long Weekends

With most of the major holidays falling either during the middle of the week on a Wednesday or on a Sunday, 2016 robbed us of the chance to rejuvenate and travel as much as we would have liked to.

Well, it’s time to rejoice! 2017 is here. And it is officially the year of long weekends!

There are over 12 long weekends this year, with the first one coming up in less than a week. There is nearly one long weekend every month no matter which part of the country you are from!

As your favourite personal assistant, we took it upon ourselves to compile a list of the 12 most likely long weekends and depending on where you are, how you can make the best use of them:

Republic Day Weekend | 26th – 29th January

This year, the Republic Day, 26th conveniently falls on a Thursday, and if you just take a day off on Friday, you’ll have 4 whole days all for yourself!

What can you do?

Because of the 4 whole days you get, you have an option to explore a location slightly farther away from home – Why not take a desert safari in the Sand Dunes of Jaisalmer?

Shivratri Weekend | 24th – 26th February

Exactly a month after the previous long weekend comes the 2nd long weekend of the year. Shivratri is on a Friday, so you get the entire weekend off without digging into your leave balance.

What can you do?

Coming off the heels of Valentine’s Day, you’re probably all dried out ;). Why not engage in the customary ‘Jaagaran’, and host a lovely cocktail party at home or on the terrace and enjoy the city’s skyline in the pleasant February breeze? Make sure to light it up because there will be no moon light.Rooftop_Friends_Haptik_Long_Weekends-2017Pic Courtesy: http://haptik.ai/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/1.jpg

Holi Weekend | 11th – 13th March

Barely 2 weeks from your previous long weekend is the colourful festival of Holi,  this time on Monday, 13th March.

What can you do?

It’s Holi. There’s nothing better. You should stay at home and just take it all in! And have a blast!Holi_Haptik_Long_Weekends-2017Pic Courtesy: http://haptik.ai/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Holi-Wallpapers.jpg

Gudi Padva / Ugadi Weekend | 25th – 28th March

Ugadi / Gudi Padva is the New Year in accordance to the regional calendars. The Holiday is on a Tuesday this time – 28th March. Take the 27th off and you’ll once again have 4 straight days off to spend time with your loved ones after two months.

What can you do?

How can you make the most of these 4 days? If you are into customs, you’ll most likely spend the weekend preparing your house to welcome the new year with your friends and family.

If you are looking to travel, you should look at taking a road trip to a local small town/village nearby where they have fairs, a lot of dances and the most delicious local cuisine ever made.

Good Friday / Easter Weekend | 14th – 16th April

The best part about Good Friday has always been that it’s a confirmed long weekend! You get 3 whole days off in the middle of April, no matter what.

What can you do?

The heat wave would be just getting started. So, if you want to cool it off a little before you burn up, why not head up to the serene hills of Panchgani or Kodaikanal or McLeodganj for a quick getaway?Easter_Haptik_Long_Weekends-2017Pic Courtesy: http://haptik.ai/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/66214_8762.jpg

May Day Weekend | 29th April – 1st May

Right on the heels of Easter comes May Day and this time, the holiday is on a Monday, 1st May.

What can you do?

With the summer heat kicking it up a notch, you should look to spend some time near some cool water bodies. If you are from Mumbai, take a speedboat to Alibaug/Mandwa. If you are in Delhi, head towards Dehradun/Rishikesh for rafting and kayaking in the pristine waters.MayDay_Haptik_Long_Weekends-2017Pic Courtesy: http://haptik.ai/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Whitewater-Rafting.jpg

Ramzan Eid Weekend | 24th – 26th June

Nearly 2 months after the previous long weekend weekend comes Ramzan Eid, which falls on the 26th of June, a Monday.

What can you do?

You should take a trip to the likes of Hyderabad or Lucknow where the festivities and the delicious food will make you fall in love with the festival for a life time.

The Independence Day Week | 12th – 20th August

Well, you can’t classify this as a long weekend. With Janmashtami (Restricted Holiday) on the 14th, Independence Day (National Holiday) on the 15th and Parsi New Year (Restricted Holiday – Mostly Mumbai) on the 18th of August, take leave on the 16th & 17th, and you’ll get 9 whole days to spend time with your loved ones.

What can you do?

With so many days off, this would be the time for you to plan that Leh-Ladakh trip you’ve been putting off for years! August is the most beautiful time to be in Leh-Ladakh where the roads are clear and the rain shadow would have cooled off the desert heat without any actual rain in sight.

What can you do?

Stock up on your liquor (because, you know, there’s a dry day in there) and have a nice time at home with friends and family. You have a long month ahead of you.Dusserah_Haptik_Long_Weekends-2017Pic Courtesy: http://haptik.ai/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/11.jpg
